Velocity Frequent Flyer points can be redeemed for flights, hotels, car hire, holidays and shopping. A Velocity card earns points on everyday spending like fuel, clothes and groceries.

The key choice is whether to earn Velocity Points directly or earn in a rewards program that has Velocity as a transfer partner. Ways to earn Velocity Points

Direct-earn co-branded cards send points to your Velocity account automatically. Sign-up bonuses give your balance an early lift, and shopping with Velocity partners can earn extra.

If you shop at Coles, linking Velocity with Flybuys lets you earn Flybuys points to move into Velocity. Many rewards cards also let you transfer their points into Velocity, and some co-branded cards earn Status Credits toward your membership tier.

A direct-earn card sends Velocity Points to your account automatically each month. A transfer card earns its own program's points that you move to Velocity when you choose, which usually gives more flexibility across airline partners.

Pros

Sign-up bonuses can be sizeable, often enough to cover a return flight or kick-start a rewards balance once you meet the spend.
Earn points on everyday spend, so the shopping you do anyway builds toward flights, gift cards or cashback instead of earning nothing.
Plenty of cards here charge no annual fee, so they cost nothing to hold as a backup or low-use card.
Many of these cards offer 0% p.a. on balance transfers for up to two years, long enough to clear an existing debt without interest piling up.

Cons

Earn caps apply on a number of cards, throttling points once you pass a monthly or yearly threshold.
Sign-up bonuses require hitting a minimum spend in a set window, so the points only land if you would spend that much anyway.
The premium cards here carry high annual fees, so they only pay off if you use enough of the perks to cover the cost.
