Great points earner

I use it wherever I can to maximise my points earning potential, including ATO payments. If only Amex would reduce their fee percentage, more retailers might accept them. The card has an annual fee of $249.

I am very happy with this card and rewards

I am a long time AmEx user – I have gold and platinum, and love them. The rewards have been very important for me, my family, and our four grandchildren. The only issue is Aldi and other stores, restaurants, bars, and businesses do not accept AmEx, which I find difficult to get…

Pros & cons

What's good

  • 200,000 bonus Membership Rewards points to start, worth around $2,000 at our 1c-per-point valuation.
  • Complimentary international travel insurance and domestic travel insurance.
  • Points transfer to 13 rewards programs, including Accor Live Limitless (ALL), Air New Zealand Airpoints and British Airways Club.
  • Earns 1 point per $1 on ATO and government payments, where many rewards cards earn nothing.

Worth noting

  • The $395 annual fee is high for a Gold card, where the typical fee is about $100.
  • 3.5% foreign transaction fee on overseas spending, at the high end of the market.
  • Charge card: the full balance must be paid each month, with no option to carry a balance.
